Funeral Services for Wendell E. "Birdie" Burdine, 92, a long-time Hereford resident will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 25, 2019 at First Baptist Church with the Reverend Chris Flickenger, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in West Park Cemetery under the personal care of Parkside Chapel Funeral Home. Mr. Burdine passed away, Thursday, February 21, 2019 in Hereford.

Wendell Edward Burdine was born January 11, 1927, in Rochester Texas, to Columbus Braxton and Ella (Twiner) Burdine. He attended schools in O’Donnell , Lubbock, and Hereford. He enlisted in the United States Army during World War II, at the age of seventeen.. He served from March 26, 1944 until January 28, 1946. Infantry training began in Camp Hood, in Killeen, Texas and then to Camp Maxey in Paris, Texs and then to Fort Ord, California before going overseas. He was shipped across the Pacific Ocean to the Philippine Islands where he was involved in combat in Manila. He was wounded from shrapnel during the combat. Japan surrendered after the Atom Bomb was dropped. Wendell’s battalion was on board one of the many ships that arrived in Tokyo Bay for the invasion of Japan. Their orders were to occupy and secure all weapons.

Wendell met Wanda Gunstenson , they married April 4, 1954 at First Baptist Church in Hereford. Wendell was an active member of First Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school for several years. Wendell founded and was a Leader for Boy Scouts Troop #51 for many years. He was a professional golfer and helped start the golf course in Hereford, which is now John Pitman Municipal Golf Course.

He once witnessed a girl drowning in Tierra Blanca Creek, he rushed to her aid and saved her life when he was a teenager. Wendell loved to fly fish at Queness and other outdoor sports including hunting, pheasant, duck and geese.

The legacy he leaves behind are his wife of sixty four years ,Wanda of Hereford, two daughters,Brenda Cagle and husband Sam, Janet Stone and husband Mike all of Amarillo, four grandchildren, Justin Brewer, Caleb Stone, Chelsey Harper, Jason Cagle , four great grandchildren, one niece, Rene` Pennnington and husband Douglas of Fredericksburg, Texas and one nephew Brian Burdine of New York.

Wendell was preceded in death by siblings, Bud Burdine, Irvin Burdine, Ruby Ellis, Inavey Carlisle , nephew, Neils Burdine.

The family suggests memorials in Mr. Burdine’s name to be made in his name to Hereford Senior Citizens Association 426 Ranger St. Hereford, Texas 79045.
